Quilt with Confidence: Essential Skills for Beginners

Welcome to our first Quilting Class Series! Pick from one or all three of these beginner classes. Each class will be $25 or register for all three for $70. All classes will require you to pre-register at least 3 days before event. Please read carefully below for class information and supplies you will need to bring with you.

#1. Quilting Basics

Tuesday, October 29th, 6-8pm

Supplies to bring:

-Cutting mat

-Clear acrylic ruler

-Rotary cutter

-Sewing machine with a 1⁄4” foot

-Pins or clips

-1-2 fat quarters or 1 yard fabric of 2 different fabrics of your choice with a contrasting thread color to practice cutting and a 1⁄4” Seam allowance

*iron/wool mat-Not necessary, feel free to bring if you want

*Choose fabric you love. This will become a mat for either your sewing machine, end table or you may want to make a set of placemats later.

We will learn:

-Cutting fabric

-How to use a ruler and cutting mat for accurate cuts

-1⁄4” Seam

-The majority of quilt patterns ask for 1⁄4” seam allowance.

-Pressing

-The importance of pressing vs ironing

#2. Basting a quilt & Machine Quilting

Tuesday, November 19th, 6-8pm

Supplies to bring:

-Cutting mat

-Clear acrylic ruler

-Rotary cutter

-Sewing machine with a 1⁄4” foot, any accessories to your machine for quilting

-Marking tool(s)

-Pins or clips

-Project piece from the 1st class

-Batting and backing fabric for the project. At least 2-4” larger than the project

-Basting spray or safety pins

*iron/wool mat-Not necessary, feel free to bring if you want

We will baste together the project showing basting spray and safety pins. I use spray the most.

Machine quilting can be done on any domestic sewing machine. Many machines come with a metal guide for quilting straight lines. Also, you can measure and mark lines with a tool or different types of pens that disappear or iron away.

I will share a website I use to calculate how much binding you will need. Then you will have that information before the next class-Binding!

#3. Binding

Tuesday, December 3rd, 6-8pm

Supplies to bring:

-Cutting mat

-Clear acrylic ruler

-Rotary cutter

-Sewing machine with a 1⁄4” foot, any accessories to your machine for quilting

-Marking tool(s)

-Pins or clips

-Project piece

-Binding

-Label-if you want to label your finished project

We will work on figuring binding amounts and cutting, ironing and sewing on binding.

Please bring questions as well, there will be a Q & A if time allows at the end.
