Each December, communities across the nation come together to honor and remember our veterans through the impactful work of Wreaths Across America. This year, Whitley County is proud to host a local event at Greenhill Cemetery, 465 E Ellsworth Street, Columbia City, Indiana, on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at 12:30 PM. This meaningful ceremony is being organized by the Whitley County Veterans Cemetery Cleaning & Restoration, with the goal of fundraising to support the placement of wreaths representing all 89 cemeteries in Whitley County.
A Mission to Remember, Honor, and Teach
The mission of Wreaths Across America is simple yet profound: “Remember the fallen, Honor those who serve, and Teach the next generation the value of freedom.” Each wreath laid at a veteran’s gravestone serves as a symbol of gratitude and a reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who have served our nation. By participating in this event, Whitley County residents have an opportunity to ensure these heroes are not forgotten.
Event Highlights
The event will feature a moving ceremony to bring the community together in reflection and gratitude. The program includes:
- Presentation of the Colors by the Marine Corps League Detachment #1435 Pride and Purpose

Why It Matters
This ceremony is more than an event; it is a call to action to remember the sacrifices of our heroes, honor the service of our military members, and teach future generations the value of freedom. Through its yearlong mission and annual December wreath-laying ceremonies, Wreaths Across America ensures that the legacy of our veterans lives on.
How It All Began
Wreaths Across America traces its roots to 1992, when Maine businessman Morrill Worcester turned a childhood experience into a lifelong mission. At just 12 years old, a trip to Washington, D.C., and a visit to Arlington National Cemetery left a lasting impression on Worcester. Decades later, with a surplus of fresh evergreen wreaths from his nursery, Worcester decided to place them on the graves of fallen soldiers at Arlington. This act of remembrance continued quietly for over a decade until a powerful photo of the wreath-adorned cemetery went viral in 2005. Inspired by the outpouring of support, the Worcester family officially founded Wreaths Across America in 2007.
Today, the organization coordinates wreath-laying ceremonies at thousands of locations nationwide and internationally. It’s a powerful reminder of how one person’s vision can inspire millions to make a difference.
